If you think you should be in here but I left you out, PLEASE email me! ________________________________________________________________ -=* The Indirect Founder of EXU: Mr. Pants. This guy is a genius. -------------------------------- He came up with Excessive UT, and if it weren't for his brilliance, you wouldn't be wasting your time reading this damn readme file. THANK YOU MR. PANTS! YOU ROCK. ________________________________________________________________ -=* EXU Legionnaires: These two guys were my chief Beta Testers. --------------------- They checked out all of the maps and made sure that they all worked and managed to be as insane and weird as necessary. *** Sir EBM: aka Eightball Maniac, EBM, 8ball, 8-Balled Maniac Provided comedic relief, gave me ideas for things in various maps, came up with the idea of Chef Fucker, which gave me some stuff to do in Photoshop one night, sent me Gauntlet.umx, and did a whole lot more. *** Sir Gundy: aka one_gundam_war, Gundy, Gundato, Potato, etc. Provided a different kind of comedic relief, in a "wtf is wrong with that dude" sort of way, but in a good way all the same. He also gave me plenty of genious ideas for EXU... blame him and EBM for any brain disease you may get. ________________________________________________________________ -=* Generic / Misc. Credits: These are all the people who gave ---------------------------- me feedback and/or contributed to EXU somehow. You guys rock! *** Winged_Unicorn: Registered waff.altervista.org for me (since he's Italian and I'm not) so I could have a big, FAST, and reliable mirror for all of you to download EXU from! And if you didn't get EXU from my Files site, you still should thank him for making EXU available right away for others. *** Hellscrag: I know he'll be pissed to be associated with this mod, but I had to add him. He's the owner of UnrealSP.org and is thoroughly against the entire concept of EXU, but he didn't mind when I posted informational threads about it on his forums. Also, kudos to him for running the most asskicking Unreal SP site out there! *** Hourences: Showed great enthusiasm in the mod, which motivated me to actually take it 'seriously' (for lack of a better word). *** Mr. Prophet: For being a pussy and not playing very much of EXU, which made me laugh to myself and boost my ego, for only a great and powerful Lord could make something capable of scaring The Prophet. He also sent me a lot of the most asskicking music used in EXU. *** Maest: Pimped EXU on a big Excessive news site which brought in quite a bit of traffic. *** Beerbaron: aka "Evil Jesus", this crazy guy provided me sounds to edit. They sure turned out well, too, I must say! :D *** Chef Fucker: A Fucker Brute who doesn't do jack shit, ever, other than make himself look really intimidating with that big cleaver. ________________________________________________________________ -=* Music Credits: All the people who made the amazingly cool music ------------------ included in EXU. I should have asked permission, but I didn't have much time... and I don't think they'd really mind me using their stuff with proper credit and all. I LOVE YOU GUYS! EVEN THOUGH I DON'T KNOW SOME OF YOU! PLEASE DON'T KILL ME :( -NOTE!- You can see all of these credits within each .umx file using ModPlug player and clicking on Details. :) *** Belated by the lurking Shdaows (Belated.umx) - by Ari Manninen for Funeral Pyre *** Beyond Life (Beyond.umx) - by IceLizard for Funeral Pyre *** Fading to Lies (DiabloFade.umx) - by Surreal for Funeral Pyre *** Gateways II (Gateways.umx) - by Nitro/Trauma for some demo *** Gauntlet (Gauntlet.umx) - by Andreas Hedlund for "Team Orbit" group *** Insomniac (Insomniac.umx) - by DJ Uri *** I Live, Therefore I Die (Live-NoVoice-.umx) - by IceLizard for Funeral Pyre. Note: I manually removed voice samples from this track. *** Nemesis (Nemesis.umx) - by UNKNOWN, taken from Xidia Gold *** Point of Departure (Point.umx) - by Necros for the musicdisk "Progression" *** Arizona 3 (arizona3.umx) - by UNKNOWN, taken from CTF-RedneckWars **************************************************************** ================================================================ [STORY]: Every SP campaign has to have some sort of story. Here's ======== the story of EXU.... "One day, a little girl was taking a stroll through the deep dark woods. Then, suddenly, she was murdered and eaten by Mutant Radioactive Cyborg Vampire Pirates." **************************************************************** ================================================================ [INSTALLATION]: For more detailed instructions with pictures, see =============== http://exu.netfirms.com/Installation.html -=- Otherwise, look no further: 1) Checklist. Make sure you have all the shit you need: A) UT Patch 436 installed (not included) B) ALL UT Bonus Packs installed (not included) C) Usaar33's Oldskool Amp'd v2.39 D) Mr. Pants' Excessive UT installed (EXU is built with v1.0) E) Maps and Music in their appropriate folders F) Paramedics nearby 2) INSTALL THE DAMN THING. A) Install Oldskool to access the SP Mutators menu. B) Click Options >> Oldskool Configuration >> Options (tab) >> SP Mutators (button) >> Yes C) Select the mutators you want by double-clicking them. Be SURE you have ExcessiveTime at the bare minimum, which gives you recharging health / ammo. Then, select the Weapon Upgrades, and, for Comedic Value, I reccomend HitSound as well. D) Go to Game >> New Singleplayer Game >> Custom Maps (dropdown menu) E) Select any EXU map you want. NyLeve is the first map chronologically. F) Set the Difficulty you want. This makes no difference: all pawns appear in all difficulty levels. I'm such a bastard. >:D G) Click Start and KICK SOME ASS. OR A LOT OF ASS. YAY. Have fun. ***************************************************************** ================================================================= [GAMEPLAY TIPS / TECHNICAL NOTES]: If you want to know a thing or ================================== two about what EXU is like before you jump in, or if you're here to see the Known Bugs list and read up on tips to keep EXU running smoothly on your rig, read this section: _________________________________________________________________ -=* GAMEPLAY TIPS: Clueless? Well, this won't help you much, but ------------------ it's better than nothing. - EXU is nothing like any other SP game out there. Or at least, as far as I know it isn't. There are a lot more enemies per map than you're likely used to, these enemies behave differently, shoot different shit, often look different, and often sound really really different. - Know your weapons. Unlike in Excessive UT, your guns do inflict self- damage. At least, on my end they do, and I can't turn it off. But either way, know your guns. Use them wisely, even though your ammo recharges. - When you see a Fucker Brute, put that damn Rocket Launcher away. - You can unlock bonus maps by shooting certain things. When you find one, you'll hear a loud sound and will see some random message. The first portal is in NyLeve. Shoot the waterfall. See what I mean? Not all maps have a bonus map, and it's usually pretty hard to find the portal unlocker. Just shoot shit a lot and you'll find more than you think. Not all bonus maps are easy. Keep your eyes peeled. - You can kill anything with the translocator by telefragging it, but don't be a lameass. Have fun as much as you want, but cheating makes the fun harder to come by. - When you see a message that says "Grab the 'Deemer and run", by all means, GRAB THE FUCKING DEEMER AND RUN! LIKE, R E A L L Y RUN! _________________________________________________________________ -=* KNOWN BUGS: This is IMPORTANT! READ IT DAMNIT. Please? ----------------------------------------------------------------- - Many maps, especially the bonus maps, *MAY* have massive HOMs in them for reasons unknown. I think I've fixed them with another full rebuild for each afflicted map, but, alas, some maps wouldn't correct themselves (EXU-QueenEnd: the Queen Arena has an invisible colission hull that's not supposed to be there. This is after multiple rebuild attempts). Fucking things. They just popped out of nowhere. Honestly... - The Brute in Ceremony shoots pupae at you, but the pupae don't bounce and explode (they're grenades). They just stick to the floor. I left this because it looks kinda funny to see pupae rolling around on the floor. - Sometimes Fucker Brutes lose their motivation to kill you, and just walk instead of zoom. Can't fix this... but they're really easy to kill when they aren't zooming. :D - Some of the traps may detonate before you trip them. Don't know wtf goes wrong, but hell, saves you from being killed later on in the map. - Pawns often pick fights with each other, despite my orders that they ally together and kick YOUR ass. Can't really fix this; it's an engine issue. _________________________________________________________________ -=* TECHNICAL NOTES: This is also EXTREMELY important, especially -------------------- if you have a slower rig. Please read! - Oldskool has the option to enable permanent decals and/or carcasses. While this is really cool, it can make maps crash UT with a General Protection Fault if you are too busy and there are too many gibs/decals on screen at once (especially on older rigs with weaker video cards). Too many decals can seriously degrade game speed and cause some maps to become nearly unplayable. *** To fix this, either disable permanent decals and/or carcasses, or shoot carcasses and gibs frequently to get rid of them. - I've had problems with bonus maps crashing. I think I've fixed all of this by now, but if you have a bonus map crash (and there aren't that many carcasses in each, so the carcasses/decals shouldn't be a problem), please email me and let me know about it. - If / when you encounter huge BSP holes, just move slowly and shoot a lot. Usually, pawns will disappear inside BSP holes and will keep shooting at you, but if you keep firing at them and dodge a lot, you'll be ok. ***************************************************************** ================================================================= [WTF IS WRONG WITH WAFF/ABOUT]: If you want to know more about what ------------------------------- drove me (insane) to make this, and just what the hell my problem is. _________________________________________________________________ -=* WELL? WTF?: (long read for those afflicted with boredom) ----------------------------------------------------------------- One day, after playing through Unreal 1 again and finishing it, I was sad. It was too easy for me, even on Unreal (not to brag or anything, it's just that I know where all the dudes are and stuff). I thought, "Damn, Unreal needs like another difficulty level or something. Or just more... action. More enemies." It all went downhill from there. Later on, I was playing Zero Black, which had just been released. I finished it, and thought it was pretty damn good for a first map, so I decided to go mess around in it. I looked around at my oldskool settings and noticed the SP Mutators bar. I had never used it before, so I thought what the hell and clicked it. There I saw all the mutators at my disposal, and then, ExcessiveTime. "Oh, Excessive shit is in here. Cool. I wonder if I can play SP maps with excessive guns?" So I grabbed the Weapon Upgrades once I realized what they were and loaded Zero Black back up. Playing with excessive weapons was a blast! Soon, I was playing Unreal, Xidia, and ONP with Excessive weapons. But it got boring... too easy. "I wonder if i took Unreal and just added a shitload more pawns to it... for my own use... would it kick ass with Excessive?" Sure enough, I tried it. NyLeve was Excessified. And shitty. I went back and edited some more until I had a LOT of enemies. Then I went and edited some brutes, and made them all fire UT rockets instead of their shitty Brute Projectiles. Then it hit me: I should modify all these guys! All hell broke loose. I went adding in swarms of Skaarj Warriors and tentacles, giving them all sorts of weird projectiles and shit, until NyLeve was thoroughly ransacked. I played it: it was fun as hell. Excessive Unreal was born. The more I worked on it, the more and more my mind began melting away. Before long, EXU was not only a package with MORE, but with WEIRD. I changed the appearances and behaviors of most of the pawns, giving them all kinds of unusual properties. Then came the sounds. I gave brutes weird sound effects from packages in the game, gave Skaarj Warriors sounds that Mercenaries used, etc. But then I realized: I have a whole slew of .wav files sitting on my hard drive from other games. I decided to import a few sounds to see how they fit into EXU. They rocked. they added flavor and increased the WTF Factor exponentially, which pleased me. My mind was really fucked up by now. EXU was growing. I started taking songs and cutting out clips of them and putting them in. Oldies songs especially, for they often had this totally random pertinence to what was going on, and randomness increased the WTF Factor. I was having a hell of a time working on this little project. Then I was playing maps with huge armies of pupae. I was obsessed with my own map; Dark Arena kicked serious ass. I loved blasting apart 20+ pupae with one shock combo. Gibs were flying in all directions, blood stains littered all surfaces, blast marks were everywhere. Chaos had ensued, and I liked it. I went back and changed the music. I still had some sanity left in me at this point, and I instinctively knew that desecrating the original Unreal music by using it in something like EXU was blasphemous. I decided to plug in UT tracks and other files that Mr. Prophet sent me. At this point, I had Beta 1 up and ready on a shitty Tripod site for my close friends to play (EBM and Gundy). They liked it, and Hourences started taking an interest in me voicing my ideas for future EXU maps. I had a project to work on. EXU became the vent for me to unleash my Stupid Energy (TM), while The Year is 4037 story at my fiction site ( http://waffnuffly3.netfirms.com ) was the vent for my serious thoughts. Having a place to vent my Stupid Energy was great, since I don't have very many friends at school to hang out with and be totally stupid with. Over the next three months, I worked on maps after school and on weekends, always making sure I had the right balance of WTF and fun, along with the right sounds and music. I released Beta 2, and a beta of the ISV-Kran maps. I released individual maps privately to EBM and Gundy, who had become what i call my Legionnaires (despite the fact that they aren't Roman). Today, I completed the last map for EXU and took feedback I had received from previous betas and results from the final full beta sent to my Legionnaires and performed the final finishing touches. The end result of EXU RC1 is what you have downloaded and installed. I honestly and sincerely hope that you have a great time playing EXU; I know I did! Even when stuff didn't work, the end result was often hilarious. I've never had so much fun MAKING a map pack like this, and I don't think anyone else has made anything as messed up as this, aside from maybe Expert Visuals. But that's different. EV is designed to simulate weed, while I have been told that EXU is a great LSD simulator. Well, I wouldn't know either way, I'm naturally weird. But anyway, now you kinda have an idea what went wrong and why EXU was dumped out of my brain. ***************************************************************** ================================================================= [COMMUNICATION DETAILS]: How to contact me, if you dare. Or if you ------------------------ just want to flame me. - Email: waffnuffly@australia.edu -OR- waffnuffly@hotmail.com (as a backup) - I frequent IRC. Join me on irc.enterthegame.com in #unrealsp or in #EXU. - I also frequent various message boards. Check out Unrealsp.org and forums.beyondunreal.com . So there you have it. EXU is yours. Got any questions or comments? Drop me a line somehow. I can always use feedback... there may be an EXU RC2 sometime, but definitely there will be an EXU Platinum. I've already started on EXU(PL)-MarMar... which some people may already know wtf I'm talking about. >:D So if you think EXU needs work, give me suggestions on what to do for RC2 and/or EXU Platinum AND/OR Excessive Xidia Gold. >;D ***************************************************************** ================================================================= [CONTESTS?]: There may be some EXU-related contests coming up in ------------ the future. Be sure to keep an eye on the EXU site, http://exu.netfirms.com , for a while. My sig on the message board also is updated whenever I update that site, so if anything happens, you'll know about it! -=* Contest Idea 1: Suggested by Sir Gundy, there could be a co-op Co-op Game extravaganza involving players who have submitted high scores to me or perhaps Sir Gundy, and then the top four or so players with the highest scores play a specialty EXU xo-op with me and the legionnaires. Yeah, it's a shit-tastic prize, but this idea is still under construction. In addition, I doubt that even NASA could run an EXU coop with seven people without getting General Protection Faults left and right. -=* Contest Idea 2: This one is a bit more likely to happen, is easier Battle Footage to accomplish, and doesn't exclude anyone who wants to take part. See a funny thing while playing? TAKE A PICTURE AND SEND IT TO ME! Any screenshots that I really like (which will be most of them, knowing me) will be put on an EXU Battle Footage Hall-of-Fame web page along with other sumbitted screenshots. i think this could be a lot of fun if it turns out! I'll probably post rules for image submission on my site later. Anyway, that just about covers this file. HAVE FUN AND KICK A LOT OF ASS! Cheers, -Waffnuffly
